Energy Lending Through MFIs

Arc Finance works with top MFIs around the world to set up energy lending programs. Arc advises MFIs on structuring energy loans, selecting energy products, and rolling out lending to their clients. Arc has developed a Partner Performance Management Tool that quantifies social impacts and provides management insight. Currently, Arc has set up energy programs with NWTF in the Philippines and KWFT and Faulu Advisory in Kenya.

Arc Finance Partner Performance Management Tool

Arc Finance has developed and piloted a tool to help MFIs manage their energy divisions. Two modules, one based on Excel and one based on the mobile-phone data platform FrontlineSMS, provide insight into the social and environmental impact of energy lending, as well as valuable business information.

Water Infrastructure Monitoring in Afghanistan

Arc has been developing an SMS-based mobile monitoring system to ensure the continuing performance of water infrastructure in Afghanistan. Built off of the Ushahidi mapping platform, the system allows communities to learn from one another to solve problems.

Developing an End-User Finance Scheme for Solar Products in Ethiopia

Arc is working with Stiftung Solar Energie (SEF) a German foundation that provides solar energy products to the poor. SEF needed to set up a end-user finance scheme in a remote part of Ethiopia where no local financial partners were available. Arc has provided strategy recommendations and designed a robust energy-focused Management Information System (MIS) for SEF’s program.

Using Remittances to Finance Renewable Energy

Arc is rolling out a project that will channel migrants’ remittances to fund renewable energy products for their families back in Haiti. Arc conducted market research in 2009 that showed a strong preference to control remittance and send energy products directly back to their families. The project is funded by the IDB and the Clinton/Bush Haiti Fund and will be executed in partnership with FoodExpress, a Haitian food-delivery company.
